Why You Should Kick the "I told you so" Response to the Curb
"Success comes from good judgment. Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment."
I can't verify the correct source of that quote, but I've heard many a version of this little axiom over the years. Makes me wonder how old I'll be before my experience will pay off and I'll stop doing so many stupid things. That day of enlightenment is nowhere in sight.
As you'll see from this…

No good deed goes unpunished! We’re talking about the I-9 Form and the good deed of pre-filling out Section 1 with your Employee’s information. The issue with pre-filling (or pre-populating) Section 1 of the I-9 Form has unnecessarily confused employers. Today, we’ll tackle this issue head…

Young Pros Need to Up their Quid to Get the Quo
Quid pro quo (from the Latin meaning "this for that") is a commonly used term in business negotiations. It’s also the foundation of every employer/employee relationship.
To illustrate, let’s say the quid represents the compensation an employer is willing to part with in exchange for labor they need to operate their business. The quo, then, represents the amount of work an individual agrees to provide in exchange for an agreed compensation.…

A Graphic Perspective of the Digital Generation
Infographicsseems to be all the rage, and I enjoy them as much as anyone. But rather than take the information at face value, I feel it's a good practice to first examine the authoring organization, and question their stake in the implied conclusion(s).
This one offers an interesting look at the use of technology and how it ultimately impacts the academic performance, behaviors, and even the mental state of teens…

You arrive at the office bright and early, ready to begin today’s round of employee onboarding. Three new hires will be coming into your office today, and the only thing standing between them and gainful employment is you and your trusty I-9 form. All three employees have been given the same instruction –…

Who's Wasting Time at Work, How, Why, and What You Can To About It
I love it when an article writes itself. This is a gift from heaven.
The company, Tempo, has creating an entertaining and revealing infographic that defines the problem (wasting time), the biggest offender (young employees), the reason (lack of job satisfaction) and offers several ideas and solutions, including (but not limited to) their own software product.
All I can do is sit back and applaud.
Er, ...I mean, all I can do is sit up and get back to work!…

Mary listened intently to the attorney in the front of the room discussing I-9s. It was a familiar story: I-9s need to be completed for all employees after such and such a date; everybody makes mistakes on them; and it’s best to correct them as soon as possible. She had decided earlier in the day to skip this…

The Jeremy Lin Effect: What an NBA Player Teaches Employers & Employees
Whether you’re a sports fan or not like me, you’ve certainly recognized the name Jeremy Lin. My first thought hearing about Lin’s accomplishments is how many other “Jeremy Lin’s” are out there we don’t know about? And not just in basketball but also within your organization? For a back up point guard who was never meant to be a serious player (perceived by the New York Knicks), Lin’s 25-point game debut should be a wake up call for all managers and employees.
What is the relevance of…

It's A Public Affair
This is a difficult story to tell. It's difficult because it's about a mistake that I made and I'm too embarrassed to reveal all of the details. Therefore, I'm going to be intentionally vague.
The mistake occurred at work. It was not scandalous or bad enough to warrant a reprimand. But it angered several employees, who in turn expressed their anger verbally and in writing.
While discussing the circumstances with another employee who had a similar incident recently, it…

You Give HR A Bad Name
It starts with a minor liberty. On the surface, it seems innocent enough. Perhaps no one will notice the indiscretion. There is no guarantee though. What if you're wrong? What if someone does notice?
There is no accounting for what people will think or feel regarding your action. But why take the chance? Is the indiscretion worth the possible damage to your reputation? Is it worth the possible damage to the HR field?
And this is what it all boils down to ...…

Slowly but surely, E-Verify is becoming the not-so-voluntary system of choice for verifying new hires’ eligibility to work in the United States. Regardless of whether or not you believe the system is “fast, free, and easy” or “too flawed to be mandatory,” the reality is that many employers…
